REVIEWS OF POW!ERFUL TALES
"POW!erful Tales is a shared world anthology that moves through a series of stories from beginning to end. Like a well-written mystery, each tale adds one more clue to the puzzle that is superhero life in Beta City. (It used to be Cleveland, but there was a catastrophe.)...The prose presented here is as polished and well-constructed as anything [George R.R.] Martin and his [Wild Cards] co-writers ever did... If you like superheroes, you'll love POW!erful Tales, and look forward to the sequel volumes that Peryton Press is working on even now."
-- Ken St. Andre, author of Griffin Feathers and legendary creator of the Tunnels & Trolls roleplaying game
" "Legacy" by Mark Onspaugh (an HWA member and one of my favorite upcoming authors, btw) is a prime example of a story that goes straight for the jugular vein. Onspaugh knows how to unfold a tale, feeding you just enough to pull you curiously along, until you reach the end and learn—the terrifying truth... Michael C. Lea's "Uncreation Myth"... does a great job of wrapping up the anthology...I was impressed by the twist ending of the tale, shaking my head, too, in awe of Lea's story-crafting ability... "[W]orthy of your dollar if you enjoy super powered tales—or if you are looking to give the supers genre a try."
-- Michael K. Eidson, editor of The Book of Exodi and owner of Eposic Publishing, LLC
The setting of Beta City (on the shores of a post-cataclysmic Lake Erie) is important as it serves as a unifying thread for a collection of (for the most part) disparate stories written by thirteen different authors. Lea did a fairly good job tying them together with a running narrative that grouped thematically similar adventures into four sections. He even referred back to some of the characters and situations in his climactic story, “Uncreation Myth.” The overall project was maybe a bit ambitious as the groupings were somewhat forced, but I have to admit it was fresh and creative and did serve to set this anthology apart from the various other hero fiction collections out there... I kept flipping back to earlier stories to spot the references and clues that helped lead up to the final reveal. Some readers may want more of a resolution, but given the nature of what is taking place in Beta City, the anthology ends right where it should. And it even leaves open the possibility of a second series of POW!erful Tales that just might introduce a whole new cast and open up a whole new realm of possibilities."
